What are you made of?
Culture, the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; the characteristic features of everyday existence (Marriam-Webster). As we study our great state and the impact that geography and social factors have on the way we live, it would be interesting to learn about the kinds of traditions, beliefs, dress, food and even, family history that each student within the fourth grade at Olds possess. This "culture" does not have to be directly related to an ethnicity or extended family heritage but can be about where you live, vacations that you take, or anything else that might affect your personal way of life.
So here it is, the post you have all been waiting for! This is your opportunity to take whatever it is that you can offer and be resourceful, crafty, out-of-the box, eccentric even-to demonstrate how your life is affected by culture. So, get ready... get set...go! Share what you're made of!

My family is from LA (Louisiana) and they celebrate Mardi Gras. We celebrate with King Cake, necklaces, and a parade. In the cake people hide a golden baby and a seed in the cake. The baby means that the person buys the next cake. I don't know what the seed represents, but the parties are held in New Orleans. I’ve never been to one but I really want to go someday. –Lauryn F.
Since my family is Spanish, and they are from Dominican Republic, we do some stuff that relates to the Spanish culture. Like after Christmas there’s something when kids get presents because it was Jesus Christ birthday. And something we do that’s not Spanish is we always go to church on Easter. Then we always go to breakfast at IHOP; which I love. -Sara C
Every day of my grandmother's birthday we go to a certain restaurant to celebrate our (and her) culture. The restaurant is called the Terascadia (I am not sure how to spell it). The restaurant is Brazilian, which is where my dad's whole family is from. It is a fun night and we love the restaurant, the people there are practically family! -Lauren U.
Every year my family holds an Oyster Roast in Wilmington. We cook and eat oysters along with my grandmother’s corny cornbread recipe. We normally invite other children so me and my sisters play freeze tag capture the flag and many others. -Pippa D.
My family celebrates Christmas every year. Our grandparents come to our house and on Christmas morning and we open presents. It is very fun. At the end of the day we have a big dinner. -Peyton C.

I celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah as well as other holidays because my mom is Jewish and my dad is Christian. On Hanukkah, my Uncle from Paris comes and we play dreidel. At Christmas, my family opens presents in the morning. This shows how culture affects my family and my life. -Aaron H.
Every year my family goes to Michigan, where my dad is from, to visit family that still lives there. We also take trips across the world! I've been to Spain, Ireland, England and I’ll go to Italy this summer! My family loves to travel and it is so often that my culture is affected by each of these other cultures too. -Sam R.
